Mini safety check

The mini safety check below is designed to prompt questions and illustrate the wide range of issues that effective risk management addresses. It is not meant to be any form of substitute for an RAC Safety Audit.

We’ve put together the following mini safety check so you can see how your risk management policy matches up.

Sample audit questions

General safety policy

  1. What does your General Health & Safety Policy say about Road Safety?
  2. Do you have a written Road Safety Policy?
  3. What does it say about safe driving practices?

Pre-employment

  1. Do all applicants complete an application form for employment?
  2. Does it ask about driving licences and driving history?
  3. Do you take a copy of the applicant’s driving licence?
  4. Do you require applicants to take any form of pre-employment driving assessment?

Verification

  1. Do you accept the submitted licence at face value?
  2. Do you take up references with previous employers including applicants' driving history?
  3. Do you inspect the original driving licence or will you accept photocopies in lieu?

Health check

  1. Do you check all drivers eyesight?
  2. Do you check on alcohol / substance abuse?
  3. Do you ask employees if they suffer from "a DVLA notifiable medical condition"?

Induction

  1. What documents relating to road / vehicle / general safety are issued at induction?
  2. Is there a formal explanation of the following?
    1. Road Safety Policy
    2. Discipline Code
    3. Vehicle Check Requirements
    4. Accident Claim Procedures
  3. Do you conduct any form of driving assessment or training as part of the induction process?

Driver training

  1. Do you have a formal driver-training programme in place?
  2. What is the nature of the training, e.g. classroom and/or practical?
  3. What training exists for non-employees, e.g. spouse, partner, sibling, agency?
  4. Do you conduct remedial training for accident repeaters?

Claims reporting and classification

  1. Does any issued documentation outline the procedures for any claim, e.g. what to do at the scene, what to do if it involves injuries, what to do if it involves the Police and/or other agencies?
  2. Is it a requirement that all claims must be reported directly to each individual’s immediate manager?
  3. Do you investigate all accidents, in order to establish learning outcomes and prevent recurrence?

Vehicle check

  1. Is there a formal policy for routine vehicle checks?
  2. Is this process applied to every vehicle irrespective of personal status, function, and / or vehicle type, including privately owned vehicles used on company business?
  3. How does management ensure compliance with the requirements of Sections 41/42 of the 1988 UK Road Traffic Act?

Discipline

  1. Do you have a formal written disciplinary procedure?
  2. Is it applied for road crashes?
  3. Would it be used for criminal road safety issues, e.g. drink driving etc?

Appraisal

  1. Do you operate a formal appraisal process?
  2. Do Road Safety & driving performance form part of the appraisal process?
  3. Do you check driving licences, safety / crash record (historic), related cost analysis, vehicle check outcomes, vehicle cost outcomes?

Communications

  1. Do you have any Safety Committees?
  2. Are road safety issues a routine part of the committee’s remit?
  3. Is driver safety an agenda item at all business meetings?
